Nearly everyday I think how privileged I am to live and work in a place where access to the outdoors isn’t just a feature, it’s part of how people live day to day.
And even within that, there are places that stand apart.
Silver Creek is one of them.
Just south of the Sun Valley area, Silver Creek Preserve moves at its own pace. Slower and more deliberate. Spend even a short amount of time there, on foot, in a canoe, or simply watching the water, and it becomes very clear why it’s been so carefully protected.
Protected With Intention
For nearly 50 years, The Nature Conservancy has worked alongside this community to preserve the Silver Creek watershed: its freshwater systems, surrounding working lands, and critical wildlife habitat.
What started in 1976 as a 470-acre acquisition, driven by a small group of locals who understood what was at stake, has grown into 882 acres of protected land.
Because of this kind of foresight, what was protected then is exactly what people value now.
A River That Works the Way It Should
Silver Creek is a true spring creek, fed by underground aquifers that keep flows and temperatures consistent year-round.
You can see the health of the river in the details: the clarity of the water, the density of plant life below the surface, the steady rhythm of insect activity.
Wildlife That Depends on It
What’s happening above the water is just as important.
Silver Creek is a sanctuary for wildlife. It is home to more than 150 species of birds, along with elk, moose, and sandhill cranes that move through the preserve throughout the year.
It’s a critical corridor. A place where species can exist without pressure, where habitat is protected, and where the balance between land and water is maintained.
One of the Most Respected Fisheries in the Country
Silver Creek is known globally in fly fishing circles. Not because it’s easy, but because it isn’t.
The fish are selective. Always feeding, rarely forgiving. It’s technical fishing.
And for the people who appreciate that level of nuance, it’s one of the most rewarding places you can be.
Memorial Day Weekend
Each year, the preserve opens over Memorial Day weekend, something people here look forward to year after year.
This year, opening weekend includes the Silver Creek Preserve Opening Day BBQ, hosted on-site at the preserve.

It’s simple: time outside, good conversation, and a shared appreciation for a place that’s been thoughtfully protected.
Why It Matters
Silver Creek didn’t happen by accident.
It's the result of people paying attention early, making thoughtful decisions, and committing to protecting something long before it became obvious how valuable it is.
That kind of stewardship shapes everything. How the land looks, how the river functions, and how people experience being here.
It’s a big part of what defines this valley. Lucky for me.
